Rocklin station

History

This is the Amtrak California train station in Rocklin, California.

In July 2006, the current $125 million depot opened with funding provided by the City and Placer County Transportation Planning Agency. A clock tower dominates this depot designed by Studio SMS of nearby Roseville in the style of 19th and early 20th century stations. Various shades of gray and beige stone veneer and complementary brown stucco are used on the building.

According to Amtrak, Rocklin is the 52nd busiest station in California, with an average of 47 passengers boarding or detraining each day.

In Rocklin, the Sierra Nevada Mountains mark the California-Nevada border. It took the Central Pacific Railroad (CP) a long time to traverse these majestic snow-capped peaks on its way to Promontory Summit, Utah Territory, in the 1860s. As North America's first transcontinental railroad, the two lines were joined on May 10, 1869. This tangible link between east and west coast railroading is considered a landmark by Rocklin, as it is among many of its neighbors.

The station was demolished in the late 1930s due to economic changes and changes in railroading. In early 1998, Capitol Corridor trains began extending their routes past Roseville to Auburn, restoring passenger service. As part of the state's investments in intercity passenger rail in the 1990s, the Capitol Corridor was created. The Capitol Corridor, which serves eight northern counties, was inaugurated in 1991 as an alternative to Interstate 80. Additionally, Amtrak Thruway Motor Coach routes stop at Rocklin, in addition to intercity passenger rail service.

As ridership increased in Rocklin, primarily because residents commuted to jobs in Sacramento, a permanent passenger facility was demanded. In response, the City of Placerville and the Placer County Transportation Planning Agency funded the design and construction of the current $125 million structure, which opened in July 2006. In conjunction with the new building, city leaders hoped to transform the historic downtown into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly mixed-use village with pleasant gathering places.

Architects from Studio SMS in nearby Roseville drew inspiration from 19th and early 20th century depot prototypes to create a classic station. A simple gabled roof of seamed metal covers the main building with two dormers. While waiting outside for the train, passengers are shielded from inclement weather by a deep eave; brackets support it. An elegant cupola atop a shallow hipped roof adorns the clock tower on the north side, which dominates the intersection of Rocklin Road and Railroad Avenue. When figuring out train schedules, passengers still need to know the exact time.

Design

Besides the waiting room for rail and bus passengers, the depot houses the Rocklin Area Chamber of Commerce offices and a meeting room.

There are moveable platforms at Rocklin station in order to accommodate Union Pacific's rotary snowplows, which need an eight-inch (20-centimeter) clearance above the rail.
