There's something to love about Sierra College's Natural History Museum of Rocklin
Rocklin Local Community Rocklin, California
Hello Friends, Nice to see some of the great and unique places in Rocklin. I enjoyed my recent visit (and revisit) to Sierra Community College's Natural History Museum a lot! It's a great place to learn more about the natural history of our beautiful area and from around the world. Wow! You can get answers to many questions about the history of nature at this place for curious minds of all ages. This was, of course, a flashback to my days studying here! But worry not! At Sierra College's Natural History Museum of Rocklin, I will only be sharing its beauty and wonder. (This time, I won't tell you about my college glory days).
Amazement for All!
Museums are places where magic happens since they answer questions and spark curiosity. In a history museum, they are meant to foster an appreciation for history and enrich our lives. In that regard, Sierra College's Natural History Museum is the perfect choice! The concrete leading to the entrance of the museum contains Titanoboa (an extinct snake that lived 70 million years ago) and Phobosuchus (a relative of the modern crocodile that lived about 80 million years ago), both of which were carved into the concrete. What an amazing collection of treasures you'll discover inside this colossal collection!
As a result of taking my three-year-old grandson to this museum, I was able to appreciate it with a new sense of wonder. So much history found in one place will amaze you even without a three-year-old. Everything you see at this mecca of awesomeness (can you tell I love grand adjectives?) gives you a sense of where human beings fit on this planet we call home. With attention to detail, all types of displays are carefully designed.
All corners are filled with interesting things to see.
The Sierra College Natural History Museum was a favorite during my visit (not during my time as a student, did I mention that?) Fossils, I think. I just can't believe it! Oh my gosh, I really can't believe this! Aside from actual skulls, there are tons of bones and skeletal models on display. The replica jaw of a Tyrannasaurus Rex, an Ice Age bison skull, even a Wooly Mammoth tusk can be found in this museum. This list doesn't even mention half of the fossils I found, and I noticed a bone from a Basiolosaurus (ancestor of a whale). You're not going to find that odd when you stand beside it, is it? It's really striking! When you look at the bare bones of everything, it makes you appreciate how complicated everything is (yes, puns are sorely overrated, but this one was necessary). Several minerals of all sizes, shapes, and colors are on display in two cases!
Whatever you look at, it's all amazing.
The list of things you can spend time looking at is endless. A very nice area with antlers from around the world and a rocks of Rocklin poster made me realize how much I could see by simply strolling along the paths. A huge Brazilian Amethyst Geode that is about the size of a VW is one of the most gorgeous rocks I've ever see! It's not half as big as that, but it's still huge. It's true, just look at the picture. Don't forget about the skull case. There are over 100 skulls of extinct and modern animals here alone that will take some time to appreciate.
An agreement has been reached with the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco that has resulted in a long-term loan of some of their exhibits! Sign up for the Sierra College Museum of Natural History's email list and you'll never miss an event or new exhibit! You can request a tour of this museum by writing to museum@sierracollege.edu The museum began operations at Sierra College's Sewell Hall Science Building in the mid-1960s.
