HISTORIC SITES IN ROCKLIN
Rocklin's historic locations can be seen via our virtual tour, or you can select the text-only tour below, from the Rocklin Historical Society.
1. Old Finnish Picnic Grounds
There are picnic grounds about 200 yards past China Garden Road, adjacent to Interstate 80. These picnic grounds were once a gathering place for Rocklin Finns during the early days.
Early Granite Quarry of the Union Granite Company
Placer / Rocklin library is located at the intersection of Rocklin Road and Granite Drive. In the early 20th century, the Union Granite Company operated a quarry here under the management of Finnish immigrant Matt Ruhkala. The granite operation of Rocklin flourished in the 1890s and early 20th century, but competition from other building materials dampened the industry's growth thereafter. Even so, Union Granite, along with several other quarries, produced granite curbing and stone for buildings and monuments until at least 1915. Earlier, starting in 1903, Ruhkala operated a quarry east of Rocklin Cemetery. As of now, it is under the westbound lanes of Interstate 80.
3. Rocklin Cemetery
Rocklin Cemetery is located at the intersection of South Grove Street and Kannasto Street. In the 1850s, a local citizen fell dead and was buried on the spot after a day of inebriation, according to tradition. The rocklins cemetery has a kiosk which maps the burial sites of several historical figures.
4. Finnish Temperance Hall
It is located at the corner of Rocklin Road and South Grove Street. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Rocklin's saloons thrived along with its granite industry. After spending hard days in the quarries in Finland, some Finns became concerned about their drinking habits after escaping the strictures of the state church. Rocklin Finn Hall for social functions was built in 1905 by concerned family members of Rocklins Finnish Temperance Society. Helen Kesti wrote in her 1967 memoirs that granite blocks donated by Finnish quarry owners formed the steps and foundation of the building. The father of Kistis and his friends could identify the source and delivery team of every block.
